Holidays to Northern Germany

Northern Germany is a land of strong character – and contrasts.

Learn More

Endless beaches, sand dunes and picturesque fishing villages line the North Sea and Baltic coasts. The island of Sylt, often described as the “Queen of the North Sea”, together with Rügen, Germany’s largest island, and Usedom, known for its long hours of sunshine, are all popular holiday destinations with German visitors but remain much less familiar to many travellers from Britain.

Inland, the landscape changes to gently rolling countryside, lakes and wide expanses of heathland.

From the Lüneburg Heath, the beautiful town of Celle, with more than 500 half-timbered houses in its old town, makes a rewarding visit. The Harz Mountains offer excellent walking and attractive historic towns such as UNESCO-listed Goslar.

Northern Germany is also home to some of the country’s most distinctive cities: Hamburg, with its maritime character, elegant shopping streets and famous nightlife; Hanover, known for its trade fairs and annual Schützenfest; Bremen, with its impressive historic town hall and strong maritime heritage; and Lübeck, with its canals, brick Gothic architecture and unmistakable skyline. And then there is Hamelin, forever associated with the legend of the Pied Piper.
