Holidays to The Black Forest (including Lake Constance)

To the west of Bavaria lies the state of Baden-Württemberg, home of the Black Forest, a vast, unspoilt area of pine woods, mountains, lakes – and glorious fresh air. A land of tradition, it is famous for its cuckoo clocks, folk costumes and of course Black Forest Gateaux.

The German Clock Route leads the visitor through some of the most beautiful holiday resorts and landscapes of the Black Forest. Its 320 km circular route offers interesting clock museums and clock factories, and along the way the visitor will find charming Black Forest peasant houses with shingle roofs, clear trout streams, green meadows and dark and inviting forests.

The Black Forest region has elegant spas such as Baden-Baden, lakeside towns like Titisee-Neustadt and Freiburg, with its glorious cathedral. Stuttgart, the state’s capital and a well-recognised wine-growing community, boasts the famous Mercedes and Porsche Museums and a Beer Festival to compete with the Oktoberfest.

Heidelberg, situated at the northern end of this state, is still redolent of German romanticism capturing the imagination of its visitors from across the world with its famous castle and the oldest university in Germany.  Finally, to the south lies Lake Constance (“Bodensee”), the inland sea of central Europe, with its exquisite lakeside towns, lush orchards and vineyards and its gentle climate and almost mediterranean atmosphere.
