The Colditz Castle Experience

Colditz Castle is one of Germany’s most fascinating destinations for anyone interested in Second World War history.

During the Second World War, the castle became Oflag IV-C, the prisoner-of-war camp intended for Allied officers who had repeatedly escaped from other camps. Its apparently escape-proof setting instead inspired some of the most ingenious escape attempts of the war and made Colditz one of the best-known prisoner-of-war camps of its time.

Today, visitors can discover the extraordinary stories of the prisoners, their escape attempts and life inside the castle.

Travel without Borders has been helping British visitors experience Colditz Castle since 2008. Whether Colditz is the main purpose of your trip or part of a wider holiday in Germany, we can help plan the visit around your available time, interests and preferred way of travelling.

Getting to Colditz and combining the different elements of a visit is not always straightforward. Our knowledge of Germany and experience of planning Colditz trips means we can take care of the research and put the different parts of your itinerary together for you.

There is no need to join a lengthy escorted military-history tour simply because you want to visit Colditz.

A Colditz trip can be planned independently and entirely around what you want to see and do.

Depending on your requirements, your itinerary can include hotel accommodation, a stay in the youth hostel within Colditz Castle or self-catering accommodation, together with the most suitable transport arrangements for your journey.

A visit to Colditz Castle itself can be incorporated into the itinerary, and where appropriate we can also assist with specially arranged private guided visits, subject to availability and the arrangements offered by the castle.

Your Colditz visit can stand alone as a short break or be combined with destinations such as Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin or other places of particular interest to you.

“The First Quick Escape Attempt”

Ideal for those whose main objective is simply to experience Colditz Castle.

A short Colditz break might include:

  • Travel planning from the UK to Germany
  • Onward travel and local transport planning to Colditz
  • Two nights’ accommodation
  • A visit to Colditz Castle
  • Advice and planning tailored to your individual requirements

“The Second Quick Escape Attempt”

For those who would prefer a little more time in the area.

Your itinerary could include:

  • Travel and transport planning
  • Accommodation in or around Colditz
  • A visit to Colditz Castle
  • Time to explore Colditz and the surrounding area
  • Additional sightseeing according to your interests

“The First Successful Escape”

Combine Colditz with another destination in Saxony.

Colditz works particularly well as part of a wider itinerary, allowing you to combine your principal visit to the castle with another city or region rather than making a long journey simply for one attraction.

We can design the itinerary around your available time and advise on the most practical combination of accommodation and transport.

“Escape with Friends”

Travelling with friends or family?

A Colditz trip can be planned for several people while still retaining the flexibility of independent travel.

We can research suitable accommodation, transport and sightseeing arrangements and build an itinerary around the interests of your particular group.

“The Group Escape”

Colditz can also form the focus of a tailor-made itinerary for a private group.

Depending on the group’s requirements, planning can incorporate suitable group accommodation and transport, visits connected with military history and other places of interest, local guiding and a wider programme within Saxony or elsewhere in Germany.

Every group is different, so arrangements are developed around its particular interests rather than following a standard escorted-tour programme.

Planning Your Colditz Castle Trip

The examples above are intended as inspiration rather than fixed packages.

Travel without Borders provides a bespoke travel-planning service, allowing your Colditz experience to be designed around your dates, interests, budget and preferred style of travel.

We can research and incorporate:

  • Hotel, youth-hostel or self-catering accommodation
  • The most appropriate travel and local transport options
  • Your Colditz Castle visit
  • Private guiding where appropriate and available
  • Additional places connected with your interests
  • A wider itinerary combining Colditz with other parts of Germany

You remain in control of your trip and make your own bookings directly with the relevant travel and accommodation providers.

Castle opening arrangements, exhibitions and guided-visit opportunities can change and will therefore be considered according to the dates of your proposed visit.
