Perhaps most well-known as a city of music and of trade fairs, Leipzig has developed into one of Germany’s most vibrant cities. With its unique contrasting characteristics, the city retains its regional flavour on one hand and high-tech business on the other hand.

Few other cities can claim as rich a musical heritage as Leipzig. Johann Sebastian Bach (who lies buried in St. Thomas church) and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy are inextricably linked to Leipzig, but there are many other composers linked to Leipzig too. The world-class Gewandhaus Orchestra has cultivated classical music here for over 250 years and St. Thomas Boys Choir, founded over 800 years ago, still performs regularly. Leipzig’s operatic tradition is also amongst the oldest in Germany.
Leipzig is a city oozing history, more recent history points to Leipzig for the peace prayers in St. Nicholas Church and the peaceful revolution on 09 October 1989. The demonstrations which started in Leipzig, then spread throughout East Germany, ultimately leading to the opening of the borders on 09 November 1989 and the fall of the communist regime.
Leipzig is all of the above and more: it boasts a dynamic art scene, a wealth of architecture and it is a paradise for shoppers with its numerous elegant arcades and courtyards, not forgetting all the clubs and bars for the night owls!
