You may be wondering just what exactly makes this holiday route so special. Linking Würzburg in the north with Füssen at the edge of the Alps, the Romantic Road brings together historic towns, medieval architecture, beautiful countryside, churches, castles and centuries of German history.
Today, the route stretches for around 460 kilometres and incorporates 29 towns, making it one of Germany’s best-known holiday routes.
The history behind The Romantic Road
Although many of the towns and roads along the route have histories stretching back hundreds or even thousands of years, the Romantic Road itself was created as a tourism route in 1950.
Its founders brought together a series of historic towns and landscapes between the River Main and the Alps to introduce visitors to a different side of Germany. Over the decades it has become internationally famous, particularly for its combination of medieval towns, historic buildings, rural landscapes and the castles of southern Bavaria.
More than 75 years later, the Romantic Road remains one of Germany’s best-known touring routes.
Things to do along the way
This scenic route offers more than meets the eye. You will encounter colourful window boxes, historic town centres, impressive castles and churches, half-timbered buildings and beautiful stretches of countryside.
But there’s so much more you can do along the way than just sightseeing!
- Stop off at a local restaurant and dine in a historic courtyard or traditional inn. There is a wonderful selection of local and family-run restaurants along the route where you can discover regional German cuisine.
- Take a leisurely stroll through historic parks, town walls and countryside. If you’re taking several days to travel the route, allow yourself time to stop rather than simply moving from one famous sight to another.
- Explore the historic castles and palaces. One of the most famous is King Ludwig II’s Neuschwanstein Castle at Schwangau, near Füssen. Its spectacular location above the Bavarian landscape has made it one of Germany’s most recognisable landmarks.
- Take a trip through centuries of history by stopping off in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Its preserved town walls, towers, cobbled streets and medieval buildings have made it one of the most famous stops on the Romantic Road.
- Looking to combine sightseeing with some relaxation? The spa town of Bad Mergentheim offers another side of the route, with its spa traditions and historic centre providing a contrast to some of the better-known medieval destinations.
- The historic city of Augsburg has an extraordinary past stretching back to Roman times. Highlights include the Renaissance Town Hall and Golden Hall, the Three Magnificent Fountains and the Fuggerei, founded by Jakob Fugger in 1521 and still the world’s oldest existing social housing settlement. Augsburg’s historic Water Management System was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2019. The city is also associated with Leopold Mozart and Bertolt Brecht, whose former homes are now museums.
- Würzburg is a great place to visit, and for more than just its excellent Franconian wine. The magnificent Würzburg Residence is one of Europe’s great Baroque palaces and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic Marienberg Fortress overlooks the city and vineyards from the opposite side of the River Main.
You can also take time to explore some of the smaller towns along the way. These stops often provide the opportunity to experience local culture at a slower pace, discover regional food and perhaps practise some of the German you’ve learnt.

We’ve summarised some useful tips to help you if you’re thinking of planning a trip to Germany to experience the Romantic Road.
- You do not have to drive the Romantic Road. Several of the larger towns along the route can be reached by train, and all of the larger towns are connected to the regional public transport network. Würzburg, Donauwörth and Augsburg have connections to Germany’s ICE high-speed rail network. Other destinations can often be reached by combining regional trains and buses. There is no single railway line that follows the entire Romantic Road from Würzburg to Füssen, so a public-transport itinerary requires a little more planning.
- There is also a special Romantic Road Coach. The coach service has been associated with the route since 1950 and operates seasonally, currently from May to September, serving selected destinations along the Romantic Road. This can be particularly useful for visitors who want to experience parts of the route without driving. A 2026 timetable is available from the official Romantic Road organisation.
- The route can also be explored more slowly by bicycle or on foot, with dedicated long-distance cycling and walking routes following the Romantic Road through the countryside and historic towns.
