It all started with a vow made in Oberammergau during the plague in 1633…..

During the Thirty Years’ War the Black Death came to Oberammergau and it was during this time of pain, suffering and death that six aldermen and twelve parish representatives of Oberammergau met and swore an oath to perform the play of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ every ten years to protect them from the plague. From that day onwards, not a single villager actually died of the plague. In the following year of 1634 the Passion Play was performed for the first time to honour the vow and so, almost without interruption, this tradition of re-enacting the last days of Christ’s life has continued for over 380 years.

The five- hour long performances of the Passion Play start in the afternoon to capture the wonderful theatrical effects of dusk. All 2400 actors come from the village; they either need to have been born in Oberammergau or have lived in the village for at least 20 years. An American journalist has commented that the staging, music and costuming would meet professional standards anywhere.
